Bill, no worries. I was elated to find the information as I am wrong WAY more often than I am right and it feels kinda good..........

Just came to mind...71 and 72 SS 396's did not put the engine designation on the fenders, just the SS emblems (maybe after that there wasn't much reason to refer to it as a 396 at the factory or on the paperwork/buildsheets? )

Dave,
If I understand your statement correctly you pretty close. The SS 350 Chevelles used only the SS emblems whereas the SS396 and SS454 cars used the numerals underneath the SS fender emblems. |

That's a very nice and correct big block Chevelle. It was at the Vargo show this past fall.

If you find a 402 emblem on the side of the 70 model trucks I will help eat the darn thing.I have never heard of a 402 emblem nor have I ever seen one.Doesen't mean that they were not any but I will help eat one if found LOL.I will just put a little A1 Steak sauce on it and eat slowly!

Back to the original question... are we saying there is nothing unusual about his car and that every big block SS in 72 had a 400 decal on the air cleaner and 400 listed on the build sheet?

I had a 1972 Heavy Chevy Chevelle that had the same decal on the air cleaner and it was a big block.

There was a 71 454 SS at the dealership I worked at. I don't recall that type of decal either. This one was a flapper hood car though. Maybe the air cleaner lid was to small for that monster. I know they used that same type decal on the 71 Vette LS-6 cars. That's a gorgeous car! I'll bet it goes with "buy it now" in the next day or so.
