was that engine used in NASCAR? where there any 64 mercurys raced in that year? not park lane conv. but any others?

[/ QUOTE ]

The SOHC was developed by Ford to combat the Chrysler Hemi on NASCAR tracks. NASCAR vetoed the SOHC and I think that decision led to the temporary ban of the Hemi as well. (The Hemi ban sent Richard Petty into drag racing for a short time before the ban was lifted.)

"Fastback" '63 and '64 Ford Galaxies and Merc Marauders raced in NASCAR and the fastback roofline was designed specifically for NASCAR tracks after the boxtop roofline proved too drag-inducing.

Going off the top of my head here so corrections are welcomed.

No SOHC cars factory-built. And it would be strange to put it in a top-line Merc and not a Ford . . .

[/ QUOTE ]

obviously another one of one

The SOHC had an 8' timing chain, which was a chore to keep tight, but NASCAR banned the motor because nobody could mechanically compete with it. When Ford came out with the Boss 429, they got back into NASCAR in a big way.
