Rick restores them as the evidence he uncovers "tells" him to - the right way to do it in my opinion. I've found a very green phospate-type coating on the shaft in a couple of cases.

With all due respect, you ask a lot of questions on how to restore various parts. I don't know what the condition of the car is (was) you're working on is, but you'll have a much more accurate resto if you will closely examine YOUR parts so you can determine how they were finished originally. It takes a lot of time to inspect them. Maybe this isn't realistic for you or the car your working on. Good luck in any case.
