Default Assembly line valve caps 1969- 1970

Had 2 of the type in first pic.
Both were from 1969 new condition factory spare tires.
1 Chevelle and 1 Corvette.
Second pic is the Corvette one

Pic 3 is part of a large sack of old caps I bought looking for type in first 2 pics. None like that but plenty DILL 627 ones.
All in pic are 627's and have more.

Question is I see the 627 referenced routinely as the "correct Assy line" caps.

What is your take?
I completed the set of first type but what is the real story with the 627?

Definitely very common.
Any that need 627's can have sets for shipping cost as I do not need them. Have well over 200.

ADDIND ALL extra 627 caps are spoken for.

I have seen both in my limited experience. Take the following only for what it is worth. I have nothing definitive.

The original spare on my 69 Z/28 was had a 627, and I believe it to be original, but no way to prove it. My brother bought the car in 1975. Don't know why it would have been swapped.

OTOH, the original spare on my 70 LT-1 Corvette had the first type you posted. It is not in perfect shape; has been scraped somewhere along the way. PIC below.
Again, I believe it is original, but also no way to prove it.

Several survivor cars on this site. I forgot to look at the ralley Green survivor Z at MCACN to see what it had.

What does Steve S say? He would know. Tim would be another great source, given the survivors he has. I did not look to see what Tim's survivor Corvette (achieved Legend status) had for valve caps. I don't plan to have either of my cars judged, so don't really care that much.

Henry [RIP] told us to complete the set of first type.
Considering the depth of his knowledge on 69 Baltimore cars we listened.
He had us look for extremely minute details and we still have a list to go through.
He has not been wrong yet unless part was replaced.
Many examples of his knowledge in parts of "OLE BLUE" thread.

All that said both caps we started with were off new condition 69 spare tires.
One 69 Chevelle [Firestone] F70x14 small white letter Wide Oval
One 69 Corvette [Goodyear] F70X15 thin white stripe Speedway Wide Tread

The first type is like finding hens' teeth
The 627 type are around by the bushel comparatively.

This has nothing to do with judging- just wanting it like it was on 2/26/69 when Gerald picked it up.

Pic is new condition F70x14 69 only type Firestone that has one also. Small white letter Wide Oval

FWIW 20 are spoke for already and will wait a week to send as many as possible in one trip to post office.
We live in the country.

These are in nice shape.

Odd that there were none of the first type in the entire pile.

The 65 did not have the 627's. I have had others that did. My red 67 has the Schrader's. My 66 does not have the right one's on it.

FYI
55 spoke for so far.
Will wait till 150 are spoke for and make 1 trip to post office.
Will ship in small, padded envelope.
Honor system so just send cash or whatever in the amount of shipping cost on envelope.

I paid $10 for the entire sackful and am keeping over 50 so they were free really.

I would think a 69 Baltimore 4d plain jane Malibu granny mobile would be the best place to look.

Hi perf cars get jacked around.

Wonder if wheels came with stems or if they were put in when tires were installed?

Really interested in what the deep knowledge folks have to say on this.

We are keeping all options open.

Found 4 more of the type 1 ones.
They for sure were not free.

Valve stem assemblies were a commodity and, as such, they would be sourced from multiple suppliers. Even if one supplier was the primary supplier to a given plant, the other suppliers would also ship some product to that plant.
http://www.camaros.org/options.shtml#valvestem has some info.

For sure makes sense and thanks.

Like to carry it further if possible.

Was told 1968 Schrader caps are the bar type with Schrader on top of bar. Also, not all 627's are the same.
Could just be mold numbers but there are definitely differences.

Sure this is silliness to some, but we like these little details.

65 spoke for.

Kinda surprised at the lack of interest in this little detail?
I guess Steve did call me a "cotter pin nut".

To all that are getting some-
Will probably send whatever amount is spoke for on Friday.
I know how we are when waiting for a new toy.

Enjoy.
Dave
