If those were just cars back then, then these were just plates, right?

Hah, no idea... but you can still see the pencil scribe lines - it was clearly done years ago and seems that at one or more points in time someone tried to tamp them back down halfheartedly, looks like.

It's a cool wall hanger for sure - if I still had my old barn find, it'd definitely go on it!
