Thanks Pete!
Yep, I've been in touch with John Barrett. Doesn't know the current owner. But I gotta ask ... how did you find (or know) the VIN? |

VIN + pics were in John’s? 06/04 HAMB posting which I found Googling his Ph.# from thread here you linked, then Googling VIN brought up a Hagerty page w/ 05/09 Mecum sale noted, Hamb link here… https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...his-out.19266/ Looks like Mercury blessed Ed Rachanski w/ a few Comets as pics below from Pg. 97 of yet another Hamb thread as this link… https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/...335534/page-97 ![]() ~ Pete .

Geez ... and here i thought i was good at internet searching old cars!
I knew about the 65 Rachanski Comet (including VIN), and I knew about that long (300+ page) thread on HAMB ... but this info (other post on HAMB) about the 64 Rachanski is wonderful! Thanks again! |

Yes, the Hamb link synopsis of the car is very informative, clipped/included below. Love to hear more of what’s up and/or your connection to the car, PM if best. ![]() ~ Pete . …..No Sale @ Auction: $74.1k # Bids: 36 Auction Date: 30 Apr 2003 Auction: ebay Engine: V8 Trans: manual Interior: red VIN: 4H23-541505 Seller Rating: (89) Book Value: none Bidder Rating: (49) # Produced: 7 Lot #: 2412552972 CONDITION: 1- 3YR UPSIDE: fair - Owner Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A. Not For Sale - Not a Classified Ad - Owner's Comments / Article Text: CHRIS'S COMMENTS $74.1k is a lot of money for a fairly ordinary-looking muscle Ford, but it's a tough car to value with so few in existence. Cars like this trade on historical importance and personal nostalgia, rather than intrinsic value. Depending on the seller's objective, $74k is pretty good, but he might just re-run it on eBay a few times to see if there are any more rabid takers. ~~~ It ain't pretty, but it's very rare, it's very clean and it's very fast. (Chris Lydiksen) OWNER'S COMMENTS 1964 Mercury Comet "Cyclone" - Factory Lightweight AF/X Race Car. One of Seven originally built by Mercury. Extremely rare and in Concourse Condition. Out of the Pat McGroder Collection (owned by McGroder for eighteen years). These cars were built to complement the Ford Thunderbolts which had a production of 110 cars. Fiberglass Front End, Bumpers, Doors, Trunk Lid with Plexiglass Windows. Raced by Ed Rachanski and still titled in his name. Restored and Documented by Renowned Restoration Expert - Donald Allen from Clarksville, Georgia. This car is phenominal!!!!! 427 Cubic Inch "High Riser" and a Four Speed with Factory Nine Inch Rear Differential. The motor has just been freshened and runs like a "Monster". This is one of the rarest Factory Race Cars in existance. Call John at 602-840-0122 or 602-692-5766 with any questions. Buyer pays actual shipping from Phoenix, Arizona. Money Wire Transfer only. Payment to be completed within three business days from completion of auction. In brand new concourse condition. This car shows near perfect. Paint, Interior, Trunk, Undercarriage and Engine Compartment are gorgeous. "Cyclone" has original J.C. Penney's Slicks on rear.….. . ———————————————————

Here’s a few 1964 Newspaper articles w/ Ed Rachanski and his Comet. First a later clipping w/ ‘64 season recap, last a Cordova Drag Strip Ad from ‘65. Some of the ‘64 articles are excerpts/not complete also there’s lots more available from later years w/ Rachanski’s other efforts including Indy cars etc. ![]() ~ Pete .
