Default Black Paint on a 1970 Elky SS?

Why would there be a special paint code for black on this Elky. All the data shows Black was a stock color code 19?

Look at this body tag, its coded 926-96459 which I find is a 1970 Buick black paint code 19 (google search turned up a page with paint codes for 65-72 Buicks).

926-96459 does show up on Chevrolets 1970 paint code list as code 19 Tuxedo black too.
Every single regular color was assigned a production code.
Why Van Nuys Plant didn't recognize it as 19 is beyond me.

Maybe it being an early built vehicle, they were not familar with the new paint code of 19 being changed
from code 10 from the previous year,so they went with the longer production code number instead.

Is that a Van Nuy's plant code?

Yes, used only on 1970-72 A-Body cars

I wonder if it could be that the car is a Cowl hood SS396 without stripes? Owner says no stripe were on it.

Is your last reply explaining that is the reasoning for the Production code being stamped on the trim tag..

I show a few Van Nuys Built 70 Chevelles having code 19 on their trim tags, both with and w/o stripes.

Possibilities?

* We know that Van Nuys used the two digit code for Chevelles but might they have used a different paint coding system for El Caminos....ie, all El Caminos from Van Nuys used this numbering system?

* Would a fleet ordered vehicle have anything to do with this?

* Maybe that code is a Buick black (even though GM)and it differs in someway from the Chevrolet black...some metallic or something?

We need an El Camino guru.

The owner who got the ELC in orignal paint says it came with cowl hood and not stripes. No indication it ever had stripes. He has POP to confrin SS396.

Only explanation is the stripe delete. Why else would they not use the 19 19 code?

According to info posted here by JM of PHS, stripe deleted would need F&SO approval so it could be without that paint code, stripes would have been a forced option. Its a June 1970 build.

I don't know, just speculating why and thats the only thing I can imagine..
btw-It has a black vinyl top

[ QUOTE ]
I think it was a stripe delete car, because there is absolutely no evidence of stripes having ever been on it. Usually when a car gets repainted, they will miss something. I checked the cowl flapper closely, and there should be some white paint on it somewhere if it had a stripe, but there's not a trace.
It's a June 1970 car, sold locally in August 1970.
