I had the pleasure to see the recently restored 1970 Camaro PILOT car #1
This car was used by GM and Smokey Yunick to test High Performance GM parts. With the restoration completed just this year, I saw the car at their second show at the 40th Anniversary of the F Body earlier today at the GM Technical Center in Warren Michigan. This is an amazing car and quite a piece of Chevrolet and Camaro history ![]() I posted a feature story on the car at www.MichiganClassics.com ![]() |

So without having to read the old threads, is there any concrete proof that this was a GM pilot test car, or just second Gen number 001 that was scapped by GM and given to Smokey to do as he saw fit?
If GM had intended to use the car as a test bed for high performance parts to include a big block, why would they have started off with a 6cly? |

I have copies of the FIA docs Chevy filed for the 1970 Camaro. The initial filing [1/4/70] does not show the ducted hood or rear axle with disc brakes. A later filing does list them but they are crossed out. There are two photos of 1970 Camaros; one is a Z28 with the COPO rear spoiler. The 454 engine is mentioned.
If this is all the "proof" there is, the claims being made need a lot more substantiation. Based on the appearance of the car at Smokey's auction I doubt he did anything with it.

pilot cars where tests to see if they could actually build the car..they sent one down of every engine combination to find probs etc..so a pilot car with a 6 cyl isnt unuasual..
I'v seen, in person 69 Camaro #000006..it was a 6 cyl glide, RS car with a 68 style spoiler...so it happened..not wanting to take anything away from the 70 above..just adding..a pilot car with a 6 cylinder happened

One of the unsubstantiated claims being made about the car is that it was built as a 454. The 6 cylinder VIN certainly calls that into question.
