As I approach retirement, I've been thinking a lot about how I will spend my free time and what hobbies I will focus on. As a life long gear head, I'm hoping to get back into the collector car and motorcycle hobbies in more depth than I have in the recent past. As a start, I am going to collect a pictorial history of my cars and bikes to display in my garage. I might as well share the information with the gang here as well!
Was there a person (friend, older brother or father) event, TV commercial racing program, or just seeing certain car drive by that caught your eye??My earliest muscle car memories are from the mid 70's when I would see the cool cars hanging out at a local Hamburger joint called Harvey's in Stoney Creek, Ontario. I worked part-time at a grocery store right behind the restaurant and the locals would hang out on the street beside Harvey's at just about any time of day. Back then we'd see Z's, COPOs and big blocks galore! When I got my license at 16 and bought my first Chevelle, I became one of the regulars with my 2 closest buddies - both named Greg :)
If you only focus on one brand or model, why? What drew you to that brand/model? When did you get started? (We all have had both pleasant and unpleasant experiences, especially when we started out).I have been a Chevy only guy my entire life. I fell in love with 1967 Camaros, but couldn't afford one as a first car, so I settled for a 1970 Chevelle at 16 years old. I fixed that car up and sold it to one of my best friends at the time when I was 17. I then bought a 67 RS Convertible Camaro that years later I learned was one of the 1967 Centennial Camaros used as a press car at the Canadian Grand Prix. Little did I know that the process of buying a car, fixing it up and selling it so I could buy the next would become a life-long exercise :)
What was your first musclecar, and how long have you been in the hobby and why?1970 Chevelle 2 door 307 "300 Deluxe".I bought it 4 weeks after my 16th birthday for $500. That was 47 years ago...
Are any of your family members involved (i.e. parents, siblings or children)? No.
Do you restore or maintain your cars and how did you acquire the skills?I used to do most of my own mechanical work and even built my first engine in my Dad's driveway with my buddy Greg when we were 17. I took 2 periods per day of auto class in school in grades 9 and 10.
Where do your interests lie? Restored, survivor or day two cars?I can appreciate all cars, but I do love survivors that have been maintained in excellent original condition. Those that are original paint etc. that look like they spent 30 years outside in the rain, don't do anything for me.
Did/do you race any cars over the years? No.
If you could have ANY car, no matter the cost, what would be your "DREAM"car to own?A mint condition 1967 RS Z-28 in Black, Tahoe Turquoise or Royal Plum.
